During the winter season, but not only, cough is one of the most common and disturbing symptoms. It may appear during or after a cold, it may be due to some allergies, or it may signal some other more serious infections. While the doctor consult is the most important, there are some other complementary methods by which we can diminish and even eliminate this cough.
Home remedies for cough could complete allopathic treatments
If your cough is due to a cold, you may need some other medicines too. If your cough is an asthmatic one or it is triggered by some allergens, then you could need special treatment. Yet, in many of these cases, home remedies for cough could enhance healing.
Among these natural remedy for cough, the one I use and always recommend is the onion and walnut tea.
My dry, asthmatic cough and onion and walnut tea
After each cold, I remain with a dry cough that persists a long time afterwards. In the past, I and my doctors did not know how to handle it. Inhalers or sprays did not help me and, at a certain point, we discovered the only choices we had were Singulair (Montelukast – the more expensive product, not the cheap one) and the onion and walnut tea.
I cannot tell you more about Singulair as this should be prescribed only by a specialist, but I can give you my recipe of this natural remedy for cough, onion tea.
Onion tea – a great source of quercetin
Maybe you have read this article about a study that linked quercetin to a Covid-19 infection. If not, please, have a look. Besides the supplements with quercetin, we can also benefit from natural sources of quercetin.
Among them, you guessed it, it’s also onion tea. Onions are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and flavonoids, quercetin included. When boiled, the quantity of quecetin is even bigger, and so are the benefits.
Walnut tea it’s rich in antioxidants and Omega 3 and decreases inflammation
The other ingredient of this tea, one of the best natural remedy for cough, are walnuts. These are also very healthy and nutritious. They contain a large amount of minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and Omega 3. Walnuts are great for the brain, the guts and can also diminish inflammation.
Onion and walnut tea – how to prepare it
For preparing this home remedy for cough, you only need three ingredients: onions, walnuts and honey.
1. Put to boil 1 litre of water. Cover it.
2. In the meantime, wash very well 5 little onions and cut them in 4. Do not peel them.
3. Take 3 walnuts, wash them very well and then crack them a little.
4. When the water reaches the boiling point add the onions and the walnuts (with the shell).
5. Cover the pot and leave them all to boil at a low heat, until the water drops by half.
6. You have to let it boil at a low heat approximately 1 hour.
The tea could resemble more as syrup, but this is how it’s supposed to look after the boiling time.
Although it does not have a very bad taste, you could drink this tea with 1 teaspoon of honey.
To see the results, drink the tea when it is hot, 2-3 cups a day.
